Here's what they had to say . . .

Course participants on the firing range at PTS

PC Chan Chi-kwong of Hung Hom Division Patrol Sub-unit Two who completed the PC Fifth Year Development Course: "It placed great emphasis on group discussions and presentations and good interpersonal skills which were essential for front-line officers who frequently have contact with the public."

PC Ng Peng-kuai of the Commercial Crime Bureau who completed the PC 10th Year Course: "I was impressed by the two-way approach of the revised course. Also, I learned a lot about management and our course instructors really cared and valued our views."

SGT Yu Lap-man of Kowloon West Emergency Unit who completed the SGT Promotion Course: "Having gone through the PC Fifth and 10th Year Courses and the SGT Course, I was delighted this new SGT Fifth Year Course invited Police psychologists to talk about stress management. We also gained a better idea of how we could help our colleagues and subordinates who are in trouble."

Instructor Woman Senior Inspector Li Mi-luen: "We introduced appraisal-report writing to the SGT Course and had officers from the Civil Service Training and Development Institute explain the details. We hope this will be useful to the day-to-day work of SGTs. Many officers took the initiative to share their experiences and discuss ways to handle stress. I think leadership training is essential to courses for all ranks because in carrying out duties like crowd dispersal, every officer is looked up to as a leader."

Instructor Woman Inspector Wu Lai-fong: "Group discussions and practical exercises in the new courses help build team spirit and leadership skills. Doing our own research and making teaching materials are also a good source of satisfaction."
