PTS-enhanced youths landing top
jobs

Measuring up: Carol Ng (right) helps EPD officers record on-street noise levels

With the Police Training School actively supporting the Government's Youth Pre-employment Training Programme, youngsters are receiving top skills enhancing their competitiveness in the job market.

From October to March, 749 youths graduated from PTS with some attached to different Force formations working as receptionists and clerical assistants to help gear up to find top jobs. OffBeat recently caught up with two of them.

Form Five leaver Lee Chi-wai, now 18, landed a security officer position with the Aviation Security Company in December with 61 other programme graduates.

He manned airport gates to thoroughly search vehicles and employees, preventing smuggling and ensuring air safety.

"I feel good with what I'm doing. There are nice colleagues around and my boss often shares his working experiences with me. I think this is a long-term job for me," Lee said.

Senior security staff said the physical and disciplined training Lee received at PTS benefited his security duties making him a fit and confident young man capable of handling emergencies.

Lee said he would introduce the Youth Pre-employment Training Programme to his friends and hoped they too would make the most of it.

Twenty-year-old Carol Ng Wai-yi found work as a temporary clerical assistant with the Noise Management and Policy Group of the Environmental Protection Department after completing PTS training in February.

In addition to office duties, Ng also assists EPD officers in other areas such as taking noise measurements.

Senior Environmental Protection Inspector Chan Yiu-wai said he was impressed by the hard-working and energetic young lady, saying she adapted to the job quickly. "What's more, her fast and accurate Chinese typing was a real benefit to our work," he said.

"She is good at co-ordinating and interpersonal skills which are indispensable for liaising with officers from other government departments and I think this can be attributed to her training at PTS. She's the first graduate of the Youth Pre-employment Training Programme whom I've come in contact with and I'm really impressed."

Ng said she had always wanted to be a police officer. "One of the reasons why I joined the programme in the first place was for the opportunity to attend training courses at PTS."

While working hard as temporary EPD staff, Ng was busy studying English and topics on human resources management in her spare time as well as learning first aid at the St John Ambulance Brigade to better equip herself for the ultimate challenge of joining the Force.
