Pacing and regular breaks

In the last two issues, we discussed the first two themes on "Healthy Ways of Relaxation". Before talking about the third theme in this issue, you are reminded to join our "Officers' Suggestion Scheme". Please share with us your precious, personal methods of relaxation in 30 to 50 words and send your drafts to Psychological Services Group, 7/F Tai Sang Commercial Building, 24-34 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai, or email to pcp-4-psg@police.gov.hk. Selected suggestions will be published in Offbeat, and the writer will receive a "Healthy Relaxation" memo clip as compliment. Now let's see how good pacing and breaks can help us relax.

Learning relaxation is not difficult. If you are willing to try, in the right way, you can enjoy the relaxed feelings too. Here are some tips that you can consider.

Balance between work and rest: Productivity may decline over time. Thus, a balance between work and rest is very important. Don't forget to take a short break in a busy day of work. You can choose a suitable relaxation technique and use it daily to create a balance between work and rest.

Slow down your pace in daily life: Try to slow down your pace by eating slowly. You may enjoy the flavour of the food more. By slowing down your pace of walking, you can have more time to appreciate the surrounding environment. Slow down the pace of your speech and listen to others. You may gradually feel more relaxed by taking these small steps of change. Relaxation techniques: Qi-gong, meditation and yoga are useful ways of relaxation. Deep breathing and muscle relaxation are convenient and easy to learn too. Taking a hot bath at home is also an easy way to soothe your tension.

Hobbies/activities for relaxation: Developing a favourite hobby for pleasure, such as raising some pets or making household items, is a good way of relaxation. Healthy activities such as taking a leisure walk, reading, or listening to music can be joyful and soothing too.
