CCB banks lectures on bogus bills

Point noted: DCIP Michael Yu in session

Mainland banks are turning to the Force for assistance to train staff in identifying high-quality fake banknotes.

Commercial Crime Bureau experts conducted the Force's first Mainland seminars on bogus bills recently, at the China Construction Bank in Guangzhou.

About 500 bank staff and some Public Security Bureau officers attended the lectures conducted by Detective Chief Inspector Michael Yu Shi-cheung and Senior Inspector Helen Wong Poon Suk-han of the Expert and Support section of CCB's Counterfeit and Forgery Division.

Mr Yu said the seminars focused on identifying fake notes, particularly by their watermarks and security threads.

"Some fake notes also have watermarks but there are certain distinctions in a real note which just cannot be copied onto a counterfeit. Explaining to them how the watermarks are made in real notes also greatly helped their understanding and ability to identify fakes.

"So far the feedback from the bank staff has been quite good. This was the first time they have had such comprehensive seminars and they learned a lot. We may have the opportunity to conduct further lectures for their other branches later," he said.

The Expert and Support section was established in 1997, mostly to conduct inquiries into questionable banknotes, credit cards and other security documents.

"Since then, we have set up an index system in accordance with Interpol standards on counterfeit note operations in Hong Kong," Mr Yu said.

"Because of our top system and expertise, places like the United States use us as their regional centre for dealing with their questionable notes.

"Because of this our workload has increased quite a bit, but on the good side, our expertise is now internationally recognised. We have now conducted similar seminars in several places in Southeast Asia."
