S for S hails Force riot assistance

(This letter was sent to CP Eddie Hui)
On June 4 and 5, serious riots broke out at the Hei Ling Chau Addiction Treatment Centre which called for immediate action by the Police, the Correctional Services and the Fire Services to restore order.

With the Police assistance, the disturbance was successfully put down in the early morning of June 5. That was no easy task considering the high level of tension and the number of rioters involved. Police reacted quickly to the incident by deploying sufficient manpower from Marine Region and the Police Tactical Unit to quell the disturbance and rescue persons trapped inside the cells. The operation fully demonstrated the courage and professionalism of the Force in handling emergency internal security situations.

Force members involved have done an impressive job and deserve to be recognised for their efforts. I would like to congratulate you and your staff and convey my sympathy to the eight officers who were injured in the incident. In particular, please convey my appreciation to Marine Port District Commander Kong Shing-shun who was in charge of Police operations on the island that day and Marine South Division Field Commander R.J. Goodings who led the first batch of reinforcement staff to rescue three officers trapped in a building. I am proud of their outstanding performance which was critical to the success of the operation.

Once again, please send my personal thanks and warmest regards to all the colleagues who were involved.

Regina Ip
Secretary for Security
