HKI road safety blitz

Some 420 Fixed Penalty Tickets (FPTs) and 62 summonses were issued to motorists violating road laws in a two-day blitz as part of the Hong Kong Island Regional Traffic Day.

Almost 170 officers from Traffic Hong Kong Island, and Eastern, Wan Chai, Central and Western District Traffic Teams were deployed to traffic blackspots across HKI Region on September 18 and 19.

The operation included pedestrian, mobile phone and smoky vehicle law enforcement. Some 298 FPTs were issued for illegal parking and 122 for other traffic violations, while 233 pedestrians and 109 drivers were cautioned for committing minor offences.

Road safety pamphlets and leaflets were also distributed.

Statistics showed 1,998 traffic accidents involving casualties occurred in the Region in the first eight months of the year.

Of them, 16.1 per cent and 75.6 per cent were attributed to the negligence of pedestrians and drivers respectively.
