Gymnastic PCs revive collapsed man

The PCs in the cramped kitchen

Two Police Constables found themselves all out of shape while conducting emergency first aid on an elderly man who collapsed in his tiny kitchen on September 29.

PCs Yeung Hoi-pun and Sun Chun-fung had to contort their bodies to properly conduct cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on the victim in his cramped Ho Man Tin home.

PC Yeung of Hung Hom Patrol Sub-unit One was called to the Wing Kwong Street flat where the 65-year-old had fallen into a coma. His head bleeding, he was on the kitchen floor and not responding. PC Yeung immediately started cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and was soon assisted by PC Sun of Kowloon West Emergency Unit. The man's pulse and respiration rates returned to normal and he was rushed to hospital. Both officers said they were thrilled about the successful rescue, reminiscing their huge feeling of relief when he regained his breath. They recalled their days practicing first aid skills with a doll during training.

PC Sun said: "Although I am quite experienced in applying cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, the rescue was difficult because the cramped scene forced us to bend our bodies around in order to conduct the procedure. But we are used to it as we always have to adjust ourselves to deal with different situations."

The man's 82-year-old neighbour hailed their excellent performance. "I was so scared and did not know what to do. The officers were so helpful and professional. Their devotion to duty should be respected and recognised," she said.
