Force athletic prowess comes to the fore

Force staff showed their stamina and agility to bring home a glittering array of prizes from the Athletics Championships of the 2000 Corporate Games at Sha Tin Sports Ground on October 15.

Impressive performances secured 13 gold medals, four silver and two bronze for the Force, along with the grand trophy for the best athletics team.

The championships were the highlight of the games, which comprised a number of events held over September and October for Hong Kong's big businesses. The dull and damp weather at the championships did not deter the spectators who came in their droves to watch competitors from every profession across Hong Kong go to battle.

The 100-metre sprint final had the crowds on the edges of their seats, with three Force competitors making it through the heats.

When the gun started the race, they were the quickest off the marks and a mighty cheer went up when all three crossed the line, practically together, ahead of the field. Police Constable Tang Ho-yin pipped fellow PCs Li Chak-ming and Chung Kiu-man at the post in 11.2 seconds. That marked the start of a winning streak which saw a win in the 200-metres open, first and second in the 400-metres open, and the same again in the 800 and 1,500 metres events.

The Force 4x100 relay squad beat hot rivals the Fire Services and Food and Environmental Hygiene Departments in a sizzling time of 45 seconds. Moments later they repeated their success in the 4x400 relay.

To top off the day veteran long-jumper Sergeant Tse Chap-man won the second runner-up medallion.
