Tsang Yam-pui to take up CP post

Set for the top job: CP-Designate Tsang Yam-pui meets the press flanked by Designate-Deputies Dick Lee and Douglas Lau

The Government announced on December 18 that the Central People's Government has, on the nomination and recommendation of the Chief Executive, appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police Tsang Yam-pui as the Commissioner of Police with effect from January 2. Eddie Hui Ki-on will proceed on pre-retirement leave with effect from the same date.

Commenting on the appointment of Mr Tsang, Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa expressed full confidence in Mr Tsang serving as the Commissioner of Police. "Mr Tsang has served in the Hong Kong Police for nearly 35 years and has an extensive and deep understanding of the work of the Police Force. Over the years, Mr Tsang has promoted the use of modern management in the Force which has enabled it to become a highly disciplined, efficient and professional law enforcement force. Mr Tsang is eminently suitable for assuming the post of Commissioner of Police. I firmly believe he will effectively lead the Force in maintaining law and order in Hong Kong."

The Government also announced the promotion of Douglas Lau Yuk-kuen and Dick Lee Ming-kwai to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police. Mr Lee will succeed Mr Tsang as DCP Management on January 2, and Mr Lau will be appointed as DCP Operations to succeed Peter Wong Tsan-kwong who will retire on January 13.

Mr Tsang said: "I am delighted to have been appointed as the next Commissioner. The Force has gone through a number of major internal reforms in the past few years, aimed at modernising it through the greater use of information technology, improving the quality of its service to the public and strengthening the way it is managed. Success has been achieved in all of these areas. I look forward to consolidating these efforts in order to meet the rising expectations of the people of Hong Kong and the wishes of my staff," he said.
