Traffic officers assigned to blackspots

Well 'Des'-ignated!: SGT Desmond Lau studies a traffic accident blackspot in busy Causeway Bay

Teams of Hong Kong Island officers have each been assigned individual traffic blackspots to oversee, under a new scheme to boost road safety.

The Traffic Accident Blacksite Ownership Scheme was launched last month seeing teams headed by a Traffic Sergeant closely monitoring their designated sites and studying whether education, enforcement, road works or any other methods, would best reduce the number of accidents there. HKI's eight most problematic locations were selected, including the junctions of Hennessy Road and Percival Street in Causeway Bay, and Morrison Hill and Sports Roads in Happy Valley.

Enforcement and Control Division Task Force Sub-unit Inspector Roy Ng Cheung-chun said the Scheme allowed officers to concentrate on a particular site and analyse pedestrian and vehicular flow, road users' habits and road design.

"The SGT and his colleagues will conduct stringent enforcement against traffic offenders during the high risk period of that particular blacksite. If the problems are attributed to the design of the road, our officers will forward suggestions to the Highways and Transport Departments for consideration," IP Ng said.

"The Scheme will also further boost the sense of responsibility of our officers."

SGT Desmond Lau Wing-shun, who has joined the Scheme, believed it would have a deterrent effect on jaywalking and careless driving and improve a blacksite's record.

The Scheme would be reviewed in about six months.
