PPRB's replies to the media

A letter was sent to an English-language paper correcting a glaring misquote attributed to the Commissioner in a May 15 report. The paper grossly misquoted the CP as saying police "took a deliberate high-handed approach" when he actually said "high-profile". The letter asked for the quick publication of a correction.

  • Another misquote in the same paper, published May 4, was corrected through a letter. It claimed that when attending the Legislative Council's Security Panel, the Director of Operations had admitted Police bungled a murder probe, when in fact he said nothing to that effect.

  • Another English-language paper was sent a reply for its letters page, responding to claims in an opinion piece published May 9, that the Force wished to "unload responsibility" for prosecuting litterbugs on to other departments. The letter stated that although the Force supported a clean Hong Kong, issuing fixed-penalty tickets for littering would divert officers away from their core responsibilities of maintaining law and order. Enforcement of anti-littering legislation was a responsibility of the Government and the community as a whole, it said.

  • A letter was sent to the same paper refuting suggestions in a piece it ran on May 7, that security precautions taken for the Fortune Global Forum were to avoid embarrassment to senior international officials attending. It also rejected claims that 3,000 officers would be deployed full-time for the Forum and that Mainland security officials were running the operation. The facts of all these claims were pointed out.

  • Responding to a media report that a restaurant was offering discounts to officers, a press release was issued on May 4 advising against the practice that contravened the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance. It added that the Force did not know about that particular case.
