Kwun Tong curbing youth crime

Youth offenders in Kwun Tong District are getting younger and Eddie Lam Wah-chiu wants to know why.

The KT Deputy District Commander helped organise a seminar for the area's problem teenagers on May 19.

Mr Lam said younger youths in the area were getting involved in fighting, stealing and other offences related to drug and triad activity, and officers needed to know more about their plight to find and eradicate the causes of the disturbing trend.

"The seminar was to reach out to these kids and find out why they were getting involved in crime. It was very well attended and gave us a good insight into many of the problems and situations they face," Mr Lam said.

"The District can now act on this knowledge to try and bring the youth crime rate down. We may hold a similar event in future to learn even more about these youngsters."

Some 360 people attended the seminar at the Lam Tin Methodist Primary School.

Attendees included police, local youths, members of Kwun Tong and Sai Kung's District Boards and Fight Crime Committees, social workers, Government and school representatives.

Two former prisoners, volunteers from the Society for the Rehabilitation of Offenders, shared their experiences with the youths, strengthened their civil consciousness and reminded them of crime's consequences.

Group discussions also looked at drug abuse, bullying, stealing and cyber crime.
