Benevolent CK reforms drug addict

PC Wong Chi-ko received a letter of thanks from the mother of the drug addict he helped reform

Do you believe offering a little help to strangers will lead you on the path to happiness?

Speak to Tuen Mun Division Police Constable Wong Chi-ko and he will tell you about the proud experience he had recently in helping an addict to quit drugs.

A man in his early 20s, the addict made a report about drug trafficking in the District early this year.

Attached to Tuen Mun District Special Duty Squad, PC Wong offered his help, touched by the man's scorn for the traffickers who had ruined his life.

"A recent immigrant, he had no friends here coupled with a bad relationship with his father. I felt he was not a bad guy because he still cared about his mother, and I felt sorry for him because everybody else ignored him," PC Wong said.

"Even his father treated him as a drug addict and I wanted to help get him back on the right track."

PC Wong sought his superior's advice to ensure his voluntary assistance would not affect his work.

"And I reminded the young guy that although I would treat him as my friend, appropriate action would be taken if he did anything illegal."

PC Wong spent his leisure time visiting the man's family to better understand his background.

He also encouraged him to participate in healthy activities and join voluntary organisations to enlarge his social circle and rebuild his self-esteem and confidence.

"It was my first attempt to help a drug addict and it was a great challenge for me. I was thrilled that my care helped him quit the habit and rebuild his relationship with his father.

"Although it is not our core responsibility to help problem youths, I think officers should try to find time to help others.

"Our assistance will not only change their lives, but also help improve police community relations."
