Congratulations! The first episode of On the Beat - The Suddenness of Life - has recently won the Silver Plaque at the 39th Chicago International Television Awards.

The Police Public Relations Branch (PPRB) and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) joint production featured how two quick-thinking beat officers captured Hong Kong's most wanted criminal Yip Kai-foon.

In an interview with OffBeat, RTHK Executive Producer Ms Stella Sze Kit-ling said she and her colleagues were overjoyed at the good news. It was also the first time that Director Simon Yu received this international award.

She said: "It's hard to get an award in the drama category. It really is an honour - especially since we have to compete with other US productions. Usually, their dramas are one-hour productions and each episode costs up to US$1 million to produce.

"We have to race against time in filming this series. As the actors and actresses in that episode are not real policemen, we face difficulties in coaching them on how to act in the drama.

"We have been maintaining a close relationship with PPRB officers and are looking forward to working together in the future," she added.

On the Beat aims to further enhance the image of the Force and promote public understanding and knowledge of Police work, with a view to encouraging the public to join hands with the Police in the fight against crime. The TV drama series are based on real incidents in which split-second decisions could mean the difference between life and death.
