Dealing with children and mentally handicapped people |

Crime Wing Support Group's Child Protection Policy Unit (CPPU) conducted two sessions of a training workshop on the 'Management and Handling of Children & Mentally Handicapped Persons' for some 350 frontline officers in March. The workshop aimed to enhance the knowledge of frontline officers on duties involving the management and handling of children and mentally handicapped persons in the reporting, investigation and prosecution of crime. Following an opening address by Senior Superintendent (Crime Support), Mr Armond Chan Yiu-kwok, experienced professionals in related areas from the Social Welfare Department and two non-governmental organisations gave presentations and took part in experience-sharing sessions. The topics covered the developmental stages of children, the incapability of various grades of mentally handicapped persons, characteristics of children and mentally handicapped persons, communication barriers with these vulnerable groups, as well as the handling techniques of these two groups recommended to the Police. The workshop was successfully completed and met with overwhelmingly positive responses from most attendees. The PowerPoint presentations delivered by the various speakers in the workshop have already been uploaded to the 'Child Protection' column of the Knowledge Management Database for reference by all interested officers.
