Twenty-one newly promoted Station Sergeants attended a promotion course at the Police Training School from early February to late March, during which they acquired useful management skills and learned the importance of team building.

Station Sergeant Continuation & Promotion Training Section's Chief Inspector Ms Shannon Chan Fung-ling said: "These officers are the junior frontline managers of the Force. It is therefore important for them to know the many different aspects of Police work. They were also taught topics like supervision techniques, communication skills and ways to approach and tackle a problem.

"To update themselves on the latest developments in society, we specially arranged for guest lectures on how to handle the media and organise talks with other disciplinary forces such as the Customs & Excise Department, the Immigration Department and the Independent Commission Against Corruption."

To highlight the importance of esprit de corps, trainees took part in group activities near the Wong Nai Chung Reservoir. Station Sergeants Messrs Tam Kwan-wai, Chan Chung-wa and Yeung Kwong-hung were among those who attended the course.

Mr Tam said: "In the hiking activity, instructors introduced simple games to help us understand the importance of team spirit. This was really inspiring, especially when we had to blindfold our eyes to take part in the games!"

"Through these games, I learned that 'trust' is very important. Only if we believe in each other, can we work wholeheartedly and complete the task," said Mr Yeung. His classmate, Mr Chan, said he learned the importance of communication through the outdoor activities.
