Twenty-six junior Police Constables (PC) from Tai Po, Tuen Mun and Yuen Long districts started a six-month Job Enrichment Programme on June 30 this year, offered by New Territories North (NTN) Region. NTN Regional Commander So Kam-sing pointed out that the programme aimed at equipping frontline officers with knowledge to cope with the developments of the six land boundary control points (BCP) at Shenzhen Bay, Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, Lok Ma Chau, Lo Wu, Man Kam To and Sha Tau Kok, as well as the upcoming Heung Yuen Wai BCP in Liantang.

Arrangements would be made for junior PCs waiting for attachment to Police Tactical Unit (PTU) to undergo practical training at Border District (BORDIST) for six months. The programme would also provide BORDIST with new blood to solve the problems of shortage and ageing of manpower, Mr So said.

Prior to launching the programme, NTN started conducting a series of consultation and communication in March this year, including site visit of BORDIST, forming a regional focus group to canvass opinion from representatives of JPOA in NTN, with a view to fine-tuning the programme. On June 26, Mr So personally explained the programme to the first batch of 26 participants and listened to their views.

BORDIST has designed a set of on-the-job training, such as operation of boundary command centre, village patrol, management of cross boundary students and crowd control at BCPs. The feedback on the training programme by participants has been very positive. PC Chung Mei-ling from Tai Po Division said the briefing on the programme gave her a better understanding of the work of BORDIST. PC Cheng Yiu-wing from Sheung Shui Division vowed that he would share his experience of the programme with other participants.
