Two men jailed for conspiracy to defraud

Two men aged 30 and 26 were sentenced to imprisonments ranging from four years to four years and eight months for conspiracy to defraud at the District Court today (August 1).

The court heard that a 44-year-old woman applied for an office assistant's job according to an advertisement posted in the newspapers and started working in a company in Wong Tai Sin in June 2005.

She later came across the two defendants who claimed themselves as the sales representatives of the same company and was lured to purchase a diamond bracelet and resell it to a designated customer at a profit.

The two defendants further lured the victim to buy four more diamond bracelets at a total cost of $15,700 between July 9 and 11, 2005. However, the victim was suddenly sacked by her company on July 12, 2005.

Following extensive investigations, officers of Commercial Crime Bureau arrested the two men during an operation in the same month. They were later jointly charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud and the sentences were handed down today.

Police remind members of the public to beware of the employment fraud and urge them to report any suspicious circumstances.
