Woman jailed for counterfeit banknotes offences

A female two-way permit holder was today (November 6) jailed for three and a half years after being convicted of charges relating to counterfeit Renminbi (RMB) banknotes.

The District Court was told that Police officers arrested the 35-year-old woman on May 10, 2007 after she intended to use a counterfeit RMB100 banknote to buy a leather belt which cost $10 at a stall at Yue Man Square in Sau Mau Ping. A total of 11 counterfeit RMB100 banknotes were found in her possession.

Officers from the Commercial Crime Bureau conducted further investigations and a raid was conducted on May 12, 2007 at a flat in Sha Kok Estate in Sha Tin where a counterfeit RMB100 banknote and 35 counterfeit RMB20 banknotes were seized. A male two-way permit holder aged 33 was also arrested at scene.

The duo were subsequently charged with passing and possession of counterfeit banknotes.

The woman was convicted of the charges in the District Court and the sentence was handed down today. The man was acquitted.

Police in Hong Kong have been actively taking action to combat counterfeit banknotes.
