The Road Safety Council (RSC), in collaboration with Traffic Branch Headquarters, has
broken new ground in using the Internet including Facebook to launch the
"Responsible Drivers Campaign", which encourages drivers to adopt the "3C Driving
Principles" --- "Care", "Concern" and "Commitment".
Global Road Safety Ambassador and movie star Michelle Yeoh said at a press
conference on September 3 that drivers, by adopting the "3C Driving Principles",
should exercise due "Care" on the road; show great "Concern" for safety and other
road users' rights, and make a "Commitment" to be a responsible driver.
Renowned racing driver, Darryl O'Young, Cantopop Singer Leo Koo, local artistes
Karena Lam and Lee Shan-shan also appealed to the public to follow three key road
safety messages: "If you drink, don't drive"; "Watch out for elderly pedestrians"
and "Be a safe cyclist". Celebrities also encouraged the public to support the
"Responsible Drivers Campaign" by joining up through the Internet at
www.3cdrivers.hk and via Facebook.
With the support of drivers from all sectors, RSC Chairman, Deputy Commissioner
(Operations) Yam Tat-wing, accompanied by Commissioner for Transport, Mr Lai
Yee-tak, and Chairman of the Road Safety Campaign Committee, Mr Lawrence Yu Kam-kee,
officiated at the "2009 Annual Road Safety Launching Ceremony cum Responsible
Drivers Pledging Ceremony" at Citywalk, Tsuen Wan, on September 27. It was announced
at the ceremony that in less than one month over 780 drivers had used the website
and Facebook to register as 3C drivers.
In his opening speech, Mr Yam praised various sectors of the public for supporting
the promotion of road safety, which had resulted in a reduction of traffic accidents
in the first eight months of this year. He hoped that introduction of the "3C
Driving Principles" would spread road safety messages to every household so that the
momentum of the promotion would be maintained for Hong Kong's road safety vision:
"Zero Accidents on the Road".
Mr Yam, accompanied by other officiating guests, celebrities, and members of the Road
Safety Patrol, later led the participants to pledge to become "3C Responsible
Drivers" and uphold the "3C Driving Principles".
The Road Safety Launching Ceremony attracted over 800 participants, including
representatives of various transport trades and members of the Road Safety Patrol.
Key road safety messages were disseminated through interactive games and live
performances.
The campaign will run for 10 months and the RSC will continue to use interactive
multimedia to publicise road safety messages. Members of the public can access
updated information by using the "3C Drivers" Facebook forum. Members of the public
may register as a "3C Responsible Driver" at www.3cdrivers.hk.
