In times of adversity, some people may complain but some others would face up to the difficulties boldly. A good example of the latter is Police Constable (PC) Chiu Sin-hang of Police Community Relations Office of Lantau District (PCRO LTDIST). He joined the Force in 1979 and his good performance has all along been appreciated. Although he was classified as a "Health Impaired Officer (HIO)" in 2006, he does not give up and continues to show exemplary performance in different positions. His optimistic thinking has positively affected his colleagues.

Before PC Chiu got kidney illness, he was outstanding in frontline duties and worked hard in a target to be promoted to the sergeant level. He was, however, diagnosed with a familial genetic kidney disease during a health check in 2000. As his renal function declined gradually, he was classified as an HIO in 2006. His health condition improved after receiving a surgery in 2007, but he cannot fully recover because the side effects of long-term medication have damaged other organs. Thus, he was transferred to civilian work.

PC Chiu has taken a positive attitude to face up to the adversity. He said, "Difficulties will be over one day. We should take it easy and be positive. Eventually we can overcome the problem."

Good performance wins colleagues' respect

PC Chiu was posted to an operational support sub-unit of LTDIST after surgery. His optimistic attitude and open-mindedness had a positive effect on his team and helped motivating them to handle the heavy workload. He was transferred to PCRO LTDIST and served as the Manager of Junior Police Call (JPC) Club in 2013. He quickly settled in and continued to devote to his work.

Not only did he liaise and guide youngsters at the JPC Club, he also mingled with members of the Senior Police Call (SPC). "Apart from frontline work, there are many other challenging positions in the Force which I can contribute myself and bring me satisfaction," he said.

He had served in different positions of the Force in the past 37 years. Despite his illness, he continued his excellent work which earned for him the appreciation of his colleagues. The presentation of the Commanding Officer's Commendation to him in March this year was a clear sign of his dedication and contribution to the Force. Here is his message to fellow officers, "Do not underestimate your ability. Believe in yourself, then you can break through barriers and accomplish your goal."

Epilogue:
PC Chiu has proceeded on pre-retirement leave earlier this month. He is planning to join the SPC of LTDIST after retirement and will continue assisting the Force to disseminate fight crime message to elders. This indicates that his work passion would not subside. We sincerely wish PC Chiu a happy retirement.
