New Horizons

The United Nations-sanctioned international holiday, The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, is held on May 21 to deepen our understanding of the virtue of cultural diversity and help us learn about living together in harmony. Have you thought about how you can contribute to the development of social cohesion and integration in a culturally diversied city like Hong Kong?

There are many simple things that you can do at any time of the year to promote cultural diversity. You may invite a friend in your neighbourhood or school from another culture to eat a meal or cook together. Cuisine is an important reection of all cultures. Besides, eating or cooking together helps breaking the ice and allows you to open up discussion on other topics such as hobbies and views on life. It could be an interesting experience if you went shopping for authentic ingredients together.

Another integral medium that crosses boundaries for cultural exchange is music. Perhaps you can explore the music, or even learn to play an instrument of a different culture. Learning dances originated from different parts of the world is intriguing too.

Reading translated books written by authors from a different culture can allow us to gain a genuine glimpse into their way of life. To make it easier, you can begin with a genre that you have keen interest in, such as adventure or romance fiction, before expanding your variety.

The world is a fascinating kaleidoscope of different languages and cultures. It is important that we all take every chance to develop an appreciation of the richness of this world's diversity.
