To further strengthen its capacity as an integral part of the Force's anti-terrorism mechanism, the Briefing Support Unit (BSU) has recently conducted an exercise to recruit officers with interest and potential to join the cadre. The exercise met with many applications and 10 applicants were found suitable following a stringent selection process.

BSU has tailor-designed two training programmes to develop the recruits' skills of constructing models and tap their potential. Besides a two-day in-house induction course run by experienced BSU members, the cadre invited a leading model builder in Hong Kong and a teacher of model construction in the Hong Kong University's School of Professional and Continuing Education, Mr Fung Kwong-ming, to run a seven-day Certificate Course in Model Construction in Police College between August and September this year. The last course was held in 2006.

The Officer-in-charge of BSU, Superintendent Ku Chin-pang, said: "BSU is grateful to Mr Fung for sharing his years of experience and professional knowledge in model building with our cadre members and I am sure they have benefited a lot from the course."

"Teaching police officers was quite an experience. I was impressed with their learning attitude and enjoyed the opportunity to share with them what I gained after working in the model-building field for almost 30 years," Mr Fung noted.

After intensive training and assessment, the course concluded on September 27 when Assistant Commissioner (Operations) Cheung Tak-keung congratulated the trainees on completing the course and presented certificates. "In addition to its primary role in counter-terrorism, BSU plays no small part in assisting criminal investigations nowadays.  I hope the newly recruited members would make use of what they have learned from the course to make a contribution to the Force," he said.
