In the midst of our busy work life, has it ever occurred to you that one single decision you made could change a person's life?  Here is the life-saving story of "Ping Jie", Senior Police Constable Tse Fung-ping of Patrol Sub-unit 3 Tsuen Wan District, who, by virtue of her courage and the team spirit of her sub-unit, successfully saved a person attempting to commit suicide.

Looking for a needle in a haystack

In the afternoon on March 28, "Ping Jie" and her teammates, while on patrol, were instructed to look for a missing woman who attempted to end her life by jumping into the Shing Mun Reservoir. As dusk approached, the officers found it more difficult to conduct a search in a large area in poor visibility. After a long walk on a hiking trail and going up and down hill, "Ping Jie" and her team were exhausted. Nevertheless, they tried their best to locate the missing woman, hoping they would prevent a tragedy from happening. They made enquiries with everyone they came across in order to ascertain the whereabouts of the missing person.

Matter of life or death

With information provided by a hiker, "Ping Jie" and her team sprinted towards the outer edge of the Shing Mun Reservoir, where a woman was found bobbing up and down in about 50 meters of water. "Ping Jie" immediately unloaded her accoutrements, rushed downhill, and jumped into the water. She swam to the back of the woman, grabbed hold of her and pulled her to land with all her strength. Eventually, "Ping Jei" and her teammates moved the woman out of harm's way.

After confirming that the woman was reported missing, "Ping Jie" stayed with and comforted the shivering woman. Trying to talk the woman out of committing suicide, "Ping Jie" shared her own experience, personal values of life, and wisdom of overcoming problems and setbacks. "It is not worth ending one's precious life out of an impulsive decision," she tried to impress on the woman. "Ping Jie" also hoped the woman would cherish life and face setbacks with courage.

Daughter proud of Police mom

After the search operation, "Ping Jie" could hardly walked for a few days due to severe muscle pain in both legs. But she found comfort from the fact that her eight-year-old daughter was proud of what her mom had done for the missing woman.

Having served in the Force for more than 25 years, "Ping Jie" has helped many other people in different situations, but it is the first time she had saved a person in water. The successful operation shows that "Ping Jie" and her teammates truly fulfilled the vows they made upon joining the Force: "Saving lives and serving the community".
