In the changing world, it is often difficult to keep track of everything happening round us, especially officers' jobs. With officers retiring from, and moving around within the Force, critical knowledge might be lost. Therefore Knowledge Management (KM) is capable of addressing this challenge by capturing experiences and creating a forum for officers to share and retain the wisdom gained over many years of policing.

In mid-last year, Tsuen Wan District (TWDIST), joining forces with Lantau District and Kwai Tsing District, started piloting a KM scheme to study how future KM systems can meet the needs of frontline officers.

In TWDIST, a framework of interrelated KM projects is in place, comprising the TWDIST Knowledge Café, TWDIST KM Space on Enterprise Wiki and a "See Foo" Collection Campaign.

A series of Knowledge Café sessions are being held during TWDIST training days for frontline officers to share tacit knowledge. In recent months, the topics discussed during the Knowledge Café included taking cautioned statements, handling complaints and dealing with emotional persons.

The TWDIST KM Space on Enterprise Wiki is used for giving daily briefings on current issues and instructions. Currently, Inspectorate Officers and selected Junior Police Officers have access to the system.

The "See Foo Collection" collects submissions from officers in different units so that their experiences and tacit knowledge would be accessible to newcomers.

While all these KM projects are gathering momentum, more officers recognise the importance of sharing their experiences and knowledge for the benefit of the future generations.
