Supporting the Government's target of achieving a five-percent saving in electricity consumption in government buildings, YTDIST has launched "Project E2" (Electricity Efficiency) since October last year with a view to reducing electricity consumption and making officers more aware of environmental protection.

At an appointment ceremony on May 28, YTDIST Commander Yu Tat-chung announced that the first phase of the project resulted in a reduction of 34 594 electricity units, or 5.5 percent, compared with the same period last year, as well as a saving of $38,330 for YTDIST.

Deputy District Commander Siu Kit-hung thanked officers for their concerted efforts to save electricity. He pointed out that the project not only met the Government's five percent saving target, but also inculcated green habits among officers. Thanks to the support of Kowloon West Regional Commander Cheung Kwai-kee, the YTDIST project has been extended to other police districts in Kowloon West Region.

"Project E2" comprises two phases. The first phase of the project lasted from November last year to February with a four-month competition.  Eight teams took part in the contest. Each team, comprising 10 to 15 officers, tried its best to save electricity as much as possible. The teams were free to implement their own initiatives and enlist support from other units.

During the competition period, the participating officers came up with various innovative and user-friendly initiatives to promote saving of electricity. New measures were introduced for elevators, air-conditioning and lighting at different times. The teams also designed eye-catching posters and stickers for display in conspicuous areas in police stations to raise awareness of saving electricity. The effectiveness of the project was monitored regularly during "green beat patrol"  to avoid wasting electricity.

Members of the winning team will be awarded District Commander Commendation and appointed Electricity Saving Ambassadors for the second phase of the project.
