Saving Life

Having joined the Force for seven years, including three years in the Emergency Unit of Hong Kong Island, Police Constable (PC) Lau Tak-wing saved a woman from the sea in a cold night.

Recalling his rescue operation, he said, "Upon arrival at the shore, we spotted a woman floating in the sea in  a temperature of only eight degrees and was in a hypothermic state. I immediately put on a life jacket and jumped into the sea. As there was no place to get back to the shore, I kept her afloat and kept on talking to her, hoping she would remain alert.  Later firemen moved the woman out of harm's way. She was still awake when we put her into the ambulance."

PC Lau found the meaning of police work from this operation.  "Nothing is more important and meaningful than saving lives. This is a duty of the police."

Positive Influence on Others

For PC Lau, becoming a good policeman calls for personal developments, besides "a big heart".  "I got a lot of experience from different postings, and I have 'grown up'. I paid attention to different scenarios, assessed situations, coordinated with colleagues and followed orders."

PC Lau likes police work because it allows him to help others and his efforts would have a positive influence on others. "I like the nature of police work. I wish to stay at the frontline to help people. This is a very meaningful job."

Serving with Heart

PC Lau sets a goal for each of his tasks and works hard to attain the goal. He noted,  "A more experienced colleague once said that we, as police officers, had to serve with heart and soul. We might handle many cases in a day, but a citizen might only ask the police for help once in a lifetime.

"We have to get the job done with conscientiousness. Whilst working in a public event, I bear in mind my duties and roles. Different citizens might have different attitudes towards the police. No matter good or bad, we should face this situation with a positive attitude."

Appreciating Significance of Work

To appreciate the significance of work of different natures, we need to understand how we can bring a positive influence on others, an organisation and society through our efforts.

"We have to remind ourselves the reasons for us to join the Force and see our targets clearly.  We have to accept the things that do not go smoothly and appreciate the value of working in a team.  With these goals, one would get the job done," PC Lau concluded.
