Wong Tai Sin District (WTSDIST) Commander James Betts appointed 47 students as the first batch of Hiking Safety Ambassadors at the launching ceremony of Project Safewalker in Sai Kung on May 6.

The project was rolled out in view of 221 cases of request for searching or rescuing hikers and countryside visitors in 2016 and seven of these involved injured persons. With the sponsorship of WTSDIST Junior Police Call (JPC) Honorary Presidents' Council and the support of Sai Kung Sung Tsun Catholic School (Secondary Section), WTSDIST used JPC as a platform and enrolled 47 students from the school to attend the Mountain Walk Certificate Course run by the Police Adventure Club and Police Rope Course Club in February and April respectively. After completing the course, they have been appointed as Safewalker Ambassadors to assist the Force in organising activities to promote hiking safety.

Chairman of WTSDIST JPC Honorary Presidents' Council Mr Tsang Kok-sang, Chairman of Sai Kung District Fight Crime Committee Mr Chan Kuen-kwan, Sai Kung District Council Member Mr Li Ka-leung and Principal of Sai Kung Sung Tsun Catholic School (Secondary Section) Mr Or Choi-kuen attended the launching ceremony to lend  support to the ambassadors.
