To support last year's theme of mental health on "Love N Care", the Psychological Services Group (PSG) invited former Deputy Commissioner Yam Tat-wing and his younger brother Mr Yam Tat-wah to speak at a Balances and Wisdom Seminar on December 11, 2017. The event drew a full house of over 300 Force members.

The Yam's brothers shared their brotherhood and family values with the audience. Mr Yam Tat-wah, a winner of Hong Kong film awards, said his elder brother has been a role model to him since childhood. He talked about an unforgettable memory in which his elder brother risked his life to save him near a waterfall. On the other hand, Yam Tat-wing praised his younger brother for his positive attitude in combating life challenges.

Both of them stressed the significance of family education in shaping their character. They expressed deep respect for their deceased father who taught them to lead a life with integrity. The two brothers encouraged the audience to show more care and understanding for their families and friends. As the brothers said, living in an ever-changing world full of uncertainties, family bonds are what remain unchanged.

Earlier on December 7, 20 Force members completed the PSG's first eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme. Initiated by the Massachusetts Medical School in 1979, many studies found that MBSR had proven to alleviate anxiety and depression, and lead to better sleep, better pain coping, enhanced immune system and cognitive functioning. The Force participants learned some mindfulness practices, including awareness of breaths, meditation and yoga, to cope with stress.
