WDIST joins hands with university students to combat deception

Western District (WDIST) introduced the “HKU Anti-Deception Alumni Charter” in 2019 to tackle the rising trend of telephone deception. A total of 139 mainland postgraduates studying at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) were appointed as anti-deception ambassadors to raise the crime prevention awareness among their peers.

The ambassadors proactively disseminated anti-scam messages through the WeChat platform and addressed enquiries regarding telephone deception from their peers. The campaign was proven to be a major success by effectively curbing the telephone deception cases relating to HKU mainland students from 15 cases in 2018 to 8 cases in 2019.

In recognition of the ambassadors’ active participation, WDIST Commander Wong Siu-hing presented certificates of appreciation to 13 ambassadors on June 18. Police Community Relations Officer of WDIST then conducted a sharing session with the ambassadors to explore ways to further enhance the effectiveness of anti-deception measures with a view to deterring the prevailing trend.

LTDIST raises crime prevention awareness among youngsters

Lantau District (LTDIST) is committed to preventing youth crime and deterring anti-social behaviour. On June 17, Discovery College invited LTDIST Deputy Commander Simon Southgate and Police Community Relations Officer Kwok Sze-wai to take part in a video conference with over 300 students. The video conference provided students with a highly interactive platform to raise their concerns and ask questions relating to youth crime, anti-social behaviour and police powers. The session was well received by both teachers and pupils, and the feedback received from the school management was positive.

In addition to the video conference, LTDIST officers have stepped up efforts to remind convenience store staff not to sell alcohol and tobacco products to minors.
