In support of the Force’s Strategic Direction of “Embracing the use of technology for policing in the digital age”, the management of Railway District (RAILDIST), together with frontline officers, explored on how to enhance the service quality by using technology in early 2019. During the discussion, officers expressed their eagerness to have a one-stop mobile application, containing useful information which is usually enquired by the public, so as to enhance the policing effectiveness.

Calvin, a Police Constable of the Island Line of RAILDIST, who had studied the Higher Diploma in Network Applications, volunteered to be the developer of the mobile app. He said, “I hope to contribute to RAILDIST and provide support to my comrades.” With the support from RAILDIST’s management, the Working Group for RAILDIST Mobile App Development was established in March 2019 and the development of the mobile app commenced.

The mobile app contains information such as updates of RAILDIST, hotlines for reporting lost property, cross-border traffic information, police stations’ telephone numbers and information on continuous learning for officers. “The development of the mobile app was more complicated than I had imagined. With trials and errors, the RAILDIST Mobile App (Beta version) was finally developed in mid-2019. However, the project came to a halt as all members of the working group had to discharge duties on the front line to safeguard MTR stations during Operation TIDERIDER,” Calvin said.

The working group resumed the project earlier and the mobile app was eventually launched in July 2020 after a series of further enhancements. Positive feedback was received from officers during the trial run. Looking ahead, the app will be constantly updated with more useful information with a view to supporting frontline officers while raising the service quality.
