My name is Maaz, born and raised to a Sri Lankan Family in Hong Kong. Since my childhood, I have been determined to become a police officer, hoping to fight crime and serve Hong Kong. During the series of violent incidents in 2019, I was impressed by the bravery shown by police officers, who put their life on the line to protect Hong Kong. This made me realise my true calling to serve as a police officer.

After completing a bachelor’s degree in the United Kingdom in 2020, I continued to pursue a Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning at the University of Hong Kong, while at the same time, joining the Police Mentorship Programme. In January 2021, I was given the privilege of working as an intern in Tuen Mun District (TMDIST) for one month. My main responsibility included assisting District Operations Officer in conducting a district-wide analysis on traffic complaints and accidents to identify traffic congestion and accident black spots, thereby facilitating the formulation of action plans in support of Selected Traffic Enforcement Priorities. Despite the short duration of this internship, it was an extremely fulfilling experience as I could help solve traffic issues within TMDIST through applying the knowledge gained from my master’s degree. At the same time, the internship enabled me to enhance my leadership ability, analytical and communication skills, as well as language proficiency.

In addition, TMDIST arranged for me to visit different police units including Traffic New Territories North (T NTN), Police Tactical Unit and Emergency Unit of NTN, as well as District Investigation Team and Patrol Sub-unit of TMDIST, during which the commanders introduced the duties of their units and shared their work experiences. I was deeply impressed by the multi-faceted police work and the Force’s huge responsibilities in safeguarding the city. Furthermore, I was touched by the words of encouragement from the officers who motivated me to enhance my Chinese language proficiency in order to become a successful police officer.

I am extremely grateful to both the Force and TMDIST for giving me this valuable internship opportunity. I will continue to work hard and equip myself to realise my aspiration of joining the Force.
