Emergency Unit of New Territories North (EU NTN) organised a major incident exercise, codenamed “FIRESWEEPER”, at Ng Tung River in Sheung Shui on April 20. More than 100 officers from EU NTN, the Quick Reaction Force of NTN, the Regional Crime Unit of NTN, the District Crime Squad of Tai Po District (TPDIST), Sheung Shui Division and the Fire Services Department participated in the exercise. Junior Police Call members from four primary schools in TPDIST were invited to act as injured persons to experience the work of emergency rescue teams at a disaster scene.

The exercise simulated a series of flooding and landslide scenarios under inclement weather, including the collapse of trees, overturning of cars, people being trapped by flowing mud and debris, and hikers being washed into Ng Tung River. The rescue teams swiftly arrived at the scene and gave first aid treatment to the injured persons, while uniformed and crime officers searched for missing persons and enquired about the details of the affected persons. The exercise effectively enhanced the command, control and response capability as well as the interoperability among the participating units.
