On September 7, an informant reported that his father, who is almost 90 years old and mobility impaired, went missing after leaving his home in Chai Wan alone. As his father suffers from dementia and needs to take medicine regularly, the informant was very worried about his safety.

Regional Missing Persons Unit of Hong Kong Island (RMPU HKI) took over this “missing person at risk” case and conducted a thorough investigation immediately. Upon reviewing the closed-circuit television footage, officers discovered that the missing person walked towards a nearby mountain after leaving home. Upon conducting enquiries with residents and information analysis, the missing person was believed to be trapped on the mountain.

As it was a scorching day and the missing person had gone missing for over 24 hours, the Operations Wing of Hong Kong Island deployed Regional Rural Patrol Unit and Platoon 4 of Police Tactical Unit (PTU) E Company to expand the search area. With the joint efforts of the involved units, the missing person was finally located on a footpath on the mountain near Hing Wah (II) Estate, Chai Wan. The missing person was conscious but physically weak, and had multiple scrapes on his body. He was then carried downhill by a PTU officer and sent to hospital for medical treatment. RMPU HKI officers also offered professional advice to the informant, in order to avoid similar incidents from happening again.

A day after the missing person was found, the informant wrote a letter of appreciation to the Force, praising the officers concerned for their professionalism. This incident also demonstrated the positive image of the Force.
