The School of Foundation Training (SFT) revamped the training courses for recruited police constables (RPC) in 2022 and formed the RPC Exercise Team (the Exercise Team) in August of the same year. Practical training has been substantially increased after the revamp, and the additional two-day Regional Attachment is arranged at the final stage of the training to deepen the trainees’ understanding of frontline duties. The trainees say that they benefit a lot during the attachment and find the diversified practical training of great help for them to carry out policing duties. They also appreciate the frontline staff for their support and recognition. The success of Regional Attachment depends very much on coordination of frontline formations. The Exercise Team will keep improving and enhancing practical training to equip trainees with the essential knowledge and abilities for discharging their duties professionally.

As a member of the Exercise Team, Station Sergeant Chow Hoi-sang said, “To enhance the competency of RPCs in performing their constabulary duties, the Exercise Team has designed for the practical training courses a diversified series of simulated cases on domestic incidents, domestic violence, street and traffic management, and crime prevention patrol for the trainees to apply their policing knowledge and skills flexibly through participating various practical exercises. Moreover, large scale exercises can build up the trainees’ sense of vigilance and risks required for police work to enhance their confidence and capabilities for handling frontline duties.” In addition to practical training, the Exercise Team keeps regular communication and exchange on teaching and coaching with other training units involved, with a view to maintaining the consistence of training standard.

Sergeant of Patrol Sub-unit 2 of Mong Kok District Cheuk Ching-yee pointed out, “The performance of constables who have passed out recently and RPCs under Regional Attachment show significant improvement in their ability to use communication devices and handle the scenes. When dealing with investigative work, they can locate witnesses and exhibits proactively, and they know that they should care about the feeling of the victims.”

SFT will keep enhancing the practicality and efficacy of RPC Training to equip trainees with the necessary knowledge and skills for coping with ever-changing police work.
