Caring cabbie thwarts crims and scoops award

Role model: General Chamber of Commerce director Eden Woon presents the Good Citizen Award to Mohamed Alli Din

A taxi driver who inadvertently doubled as a police driver to help subdue two robbers has been commended for his bravery.

Li Wai-chi was among 40 civic-minded people who won the Good Citizen Award on June 16, receiving certificates and cash at the ceremony in Discovery Park, Tsuen Wan.

On October 28, Mr Li saw a woman chasing two men in Tsim Sha Tsui after being robbed of her handbag. He pursued the duo in his taxi as they tried to flee on a minibus. Mr Li picked up two patrolling officers nearby, continued the chase and soon cornered the culprits who were later arrested and charged.

Another 37 men and two women aged 12 to 70 also received the award, the eldest recipient being Mohamed Alli Din who also chased and caught a fleeing robber. On September 24, he heard a cry while working in his Tuen Mun office and noticed the running robber. He then helped subdue the offender and recover the goods stolen from a woman.

Director of Operations Dick Lee Ming-kwai, Fight Crime Committee member Almon Poon, and Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce director Eden Woon officiated at the ceremony and helped present the awards.

Mr Poon commended recipients for their bravery, alertness and resourcefulness in helping Police fight crime.

"They have set a good example to the public and well deserve this award. The scheme has been a success as more and more people take the initiative to make crime reports and assist Police in detecting crime and arresting culprits," he said.

Held twice a year, more than 2,800 people have been awarded since the scheme was launched in 1973.
