Watchdog kids say "thanks"

Police pals: Watchdog kids present 'Uncles' Dick Lee and Paul Keylock finger paintings

Benevolent Force staff brought cheers from scores of special-need kids by donating more than half a million dollars to the Watchdog Early Learning and Development Centre on June 9.

The money was raised by Planning and Development Branch Chief Inspector Paul Keylock who completed the London marathon on April 16.

He joined Director of Operations Dick Lee Ming-kwai to present the cheque on behalf of the Force staff who generously sponsored Paul's effort.

In return, the kids showed their gratitude by presenting two colourful, hand-painted pictures to the Force, through Mr Lee, and to Paul, following up with plenty of hugs for their two police "uncles".

Watchdog's programme co-ordinator Stella Wong thanked the officers saying the money would go towards new learning tools for the kids and to help offset the school's deficit.

"We really appreciate all the support the Police and its staff have shown for the school and for Paul's efforts. The money will help sustain Watchdog to ensure we can continue to provide quality services to Hong Kong's special-need children," she said.

"We plan to upgrade our library and buy more teaching materials as for children of this age, it is a very important time for their learning and for their integration into mainstream schools. We are very grateful for everything Paul and the Force has done to help."

The school specialises in teaching children with Down's Syndrome, autism and other disorders which cause learning difficulties.

Accepting the kids' painting before joining them for a spot of football and basketball, Mr Lee hailed Paul's heroic contribution saying it exemplified the generosity of Force staff.

"I believe Paul is a hero and his effort shows Force members are very keen to help charities, such as the Police Tactical Unit who have fund-raising campaigns every year," Mr Lee said. "When there is a need, the Police will do its very best to help fulfil it."
