Sha Tin treat

Dining fine: Sha Tin DVC Li Tat-wah gathers feedback on the new canteen

Sha Tin Police Station staff have been dining in new-found comfort thanks to a revamp of its canteen.

The eight-month overhaul started in February, seeing virtually every corner modernised to provide more space, comfort, convenience and safety.

Sha Tin Divisional Commander Li Tat-wah said the room and furniture was revamped, and storage cabinets built in to maximise space.

Partitions were also made available to turn the canteen into multi-purpose sections when desired.

"However, the kitchen was probably where we made the biggest effort, with improvements to all the electrical wiring, drainage, cooking utilities and ventilation system to meet modern fire and hygiene requirements," he said. Project manager, the Architectural Services Departmen's K.K. Tong said hygiene and energy conservation were some of the major factors of the exercise.

"We have made considerable use of materials like stainless steel which is easily maintained, to keep the canteen in great condition over time," he said. "On the environmental side, we have adopted a lighting and air-conditioning system which can be used section by section, depending on the number of customers at different times, saving a lot of energy."

The facility can now comfortably seat up to 120 diners.

Staff views on the canteen were gathered during construction, and during a recent visit, diners told OffBeat they were happy with both the food and the atmosphere of their new eatery.

A working group was set up to ensure good operation of the canteen. Stop in for a bite next time you're in Sha Tin!
