An easier way to pay tax on time

THE high season for paying tax will arrive soon after the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Banks and financial institutions used to offer various forms of apparently generous tax loans for taxpayers this time last year. However, after the turmoil in the financial market, banks and institutions are hesitant to do the same this year.

Those who are used to taking out loans to pay taxes must plan ahead to avoid late payment and the 5 per cent surcharge penalty. But if you have joined the "Pay-As-You-Earn" Scheme offered to all serving civil servants by the Inland Revenue Department, you will not have the same problem.

The "Pay-As-You-earn" Scheme helps civil servants to plan their tax payment well in advance. Should you wish to participate, all you have to do is to fill out a copy of the GF 605 obtainable at the General Registry of your unit. By spending only a few minutes to complete the form, you can leave all the hassle of tax payment behind.

The Inland Revenue Department will automatically deduct from your payroll a sum specified by you (minimum $300 and at multiples of $50 afterwards) on a monthly basis.

One month before the due date of your tax payment, the Inland Revenue Department will send you a notification enlisting your savings and interests to let you know whether you have the money to settle your tax bill. The Inland Revenue Department will automatically deduct money from your account to pay the taxes on the due date.

The current interest rate for the Scheme was adjusted on 1 December 1997 from 4.8 per cent to 6.25 per cent, which is higher than that for savings accounts.

The "Pay As You Earn" Scheme enables you to settle your tax bill on time and helps you to avoid the need of pooling to pay the taxes on short notice. However, you have to make careful calculations for the sum of money to be deducted. You need to take into consideration your annual salary adjustment, changes in your taxable income and exemptions.

Should you wish to make any enquiries on the "Pay-As-You-Earn" Scheme, please feel free to contact the Tax Reserve Certificates Section, Inland Revenue Department: 2549-3127, or the Staff Relations Hotline: 2866-7519.

Seven important Police Hotline numbers have also been included on the list.

All Districts and Formations which have frequent contacts with the public have been allocated with a quantity of the cards.
