Seminars for JPOs Eligible for Premature Retirement
and Re-employment on Agreement Terms
POLICE officers are generally required to retire
at the age of 55. Junior police officers are, however, eligible to prematurely retire at the age of 45
under the Old Pension Scheme and 50 under the New Pension Scheme. They may also choose to
apply for re-employment on agreement terms without a break of service after premature retirement.
In order to make a wise decision, a clear understanding of the premature retirement scheme
as well as the terms and conditions of re-employment on agreement is necessary.
To help junior police officers understand their choices and benefits in this regard, the Conditions
of Service Group in Personnel Wing has organised a seminar on "Premature Retirement and
Re-employment on Agreement Terms" which covers the following topics:
1. The standard of approval for re-employment applications
2. Job security
(i) Possibility of disapproval of re-employment application
(ii) Termination of agreement
(iii) Curtailment of agreement
(iv) Resignation
(v) Disciplinary action and dismissal
(vi) Compulsory retirement
3. Financial Considerations
(i) Calculation of commuted pension gratuity and monthly pension
(ii) Contract gratuity
(iii) Comparison on the incomes under re-employment agreement terms and permanent
establishment terms
4. Housing benefits
5. Education allowances
6. Medical and dental benefits
7. Leave arrangement
The two-and-a-half hour seminar was held twice in November at the Police Sports and
Recreation Club. The staff of the Conditions and Service Group which is responsible for dealing
with matters related to premature retirement and re-employment applications spoke at the seminar
which proved informative and successful as evident by the overwhelming response from eligible
officers. The venue was packed for each session.
In view of the popularity of the event, two additional sessions will be held on 9 and 16 February
1998 for eligible officers. The venue will be announced in due course, depending upon enrolment.
All junior police officers eligible for premature retirement have been issued an invitation letter to the
seminar. They can simply complete the return slip on the letter and make sure it reaches the OC
Retirement on or before 29 December 1997.
So make your reservation now and don't miss the chance of knowing more about your choices
and benefits!
