Walk-workout brings better schooling

UNDERPRIVILEGED mainland kids are to receive an education boost thanks to the callused feet and big hearts of the Local Inspectors Association.

The body snared its $250,000 target during a recent charity walk to raise funds to build a new primary school in Baise, Guangxi province. And on top of that, the association donated a further $50,000 to the worthwhile project.

Association chairman Liu Kit-ming said the body wanted to build a school with better facilities in the province, and expected it would cost about RMB400,000.

"Those who participated in the walk are mainly members of the association, along with representatives of Guangxi province police," Mr Liu said.

To commemorate the event, the local government has named the institution Huai Nian Xiao Xue, meaning "memorial school".

Construction of the school has begun and the association will monitor its progress by visiting the site regularly. An opening ceremony will be held when works are completed.

As more money was raised than expected, the association also decided to subsidise the redevelopment project of a primary school in the same province.

The association said it would like to thank those who contributed to make the charity walk such a success.
