SLICKmoves and plenty of stamina saw the
Police Headquarters team take out the MacDonald Cup Inter-Regional Basketball Competition
on April 23.
After a competitive first half, the PHQ who are renowned for their experience and techniques, used their powerful reserve of strength to flood their Marine Region opponents with a barrage of baskets in the second half. The thrilling onslaught saw them build a comfortable lead and take the match 76-62, along with the overall first prize of the event, to the delight of skipper Chief Superintendent Lai Pak-hay. The Marines were rewarded with second prize for their brave fight. |
The event saw scores of supporters jammed into the multi-purpose sports hall of the Police Sports and Recreation Club to barrack for their teams. Director of Operations Benny Ng presented the prizes on his last day of duties in the Force. His prize presentations included that for Traffic Branch Headquarters who beat Marine Outer Waters District 74-54 to take out the top prize in the Luscombe-Leslie Cup Inter-District Basketball Competition. Wan Chai District beat the championship's dark horse team Airport District to take the third place title. |
THE Police Squash Club will be holding a Beginner Course for police officers and civilians attached to the Force who have genuine interest in the game of squash. The course, consisting of 10 weekly sessions, will be conducted between 6.30 pm and 8.00 pm from June 1 to August 10, 1999. THE Police Hockey Club Renegades matches will be held from 2 pm onwards at the Hong Kong Football Club Pitch on Friday May 7, 1999. All club members and anyone interested are welcome. The matches will be followed by the Club AGM and a buffet dinner from 6 pm in the HKFC function rooms. Those interested in attending the buffet should send a cheque for $200 made out to 'Police Hockey Club' to Peter Bacon, SSP P&D, 9/F., Tai Sang Commercial Building, 24-34 Hennessy Road, Hong Kong. Indoor hockey will again take place this summer at the Police Sports and Recreation Club, Boundary Street, starting from June 1 and ending on September 28 every Tuesday between 6.15 pm and 7.45 pm. All current members are encouraged to attend (sticks will be provided, just bring along non-marking shoes, shorts and tee shirt.) Any non-members who may be interested in playing are welcome. THE Police edged-out the Correctional and Fire
services departments to win the 15th Disciplined Services Soccer Competition on April 13.
The Force took out this year's championship after beating the Fire Services team in an excitement-packed final which saw Police pummel the competition with a penalty shoot-out. The Correctional Services Department team finished up the competition third overall after being knocked out earlier by Fire Services. |
Police Football Club chairman Senior Superintendent Kwok Cho-kuen accepted the trophy from officiating guest Senior Assistant Commissioner Lau Yuk-kuen. A friendly match was held between a team comprised of senior disciplined services officers and the All-Movie-Star team. The celebrity guests won the match 3-1. Force representatives in the disciplined team were Senior Superintendent Cheng Se-lim, Chief Inspector Chu King-wai, Chief Inspector Tsang Man-chung and Chief Inspector Ngai Chung-fai. In other soccer news, the Force Inter-District Football Competition has come to its final stage with teams gearing up for the action-packed final to be held later this month. The top contenders for Division A are Yau Tsim, Kowloon City, Eastern and the Police Tactical Unit, while the hot teams for Division B are Mong Kok, Border, Sham Shui Po and Yuen Long. Kowloon West and Kwai Tsing will also be squaring off to decide the League Shield champion. Also on the football front, the Crime Prevention Bureau Headquarters Insp. soccer team walked away with the annual Force Crime Prevention Capability (FCPC) Pentagon Cup five-a-side football competition on March 19. In a gripping match, they beat New Terrotories South after yet another penalty shoot-out. The teams were squared-off at 1-1 when the full time whistle blew. Lastly, the Police Healthy Lifestyles Five-a-Side Indoor Soccer Competition is running for three consecutive Sundays at the Police Sports and Recreation Club after a fun opening on April 25 which saw 22 teams taking part. All families and friends are invited to get down and show their support. |
