Self-education means less tax
A person can claim tax deductions for expenses of self-education paid in the year of assessment in connection with a prescribed course of education.

The amount allowable is the expenses actually paid, but subject to an upper limit of $30,000.

Any expenses which are reimbursable by one's employer will not be allowed to claim the deduction. However, if the reimbursed expenses have been included as part of his assessable income, they will be deductible.

A prescribed course of education means a course undertaken to gain or maintain qualifications for use in any employment. In other words, it must be related either to the present job or job in the future.

Tuition and examination fees in connection with the course are deductible and it is the same for fees for materials essential to the course and purchased from course organisers.

However, expenditure of a capital nature such as the cost of acquiring and installing a computer for a computer course and travelling expenses for attending a course are not deductible.

Expenses on self-study which do not fall within the definition of the prescribed course of education cannot be deducted for salaries tax purposes. General interest classes, for example a "Tai Chi" course, will not be qualify as an employment-related course.

(The interest rate for Tax Certificate purchased under the Pay-As-you-Earn Scheme has been adjusted to 4.7083 per cent since May 2, 1999.)
