FORCE orienteer Steve Holmes is making preparations to represent Hong Kong in international competition in late September when he will compete in World Cup events in Eastern Europe before travelling on to Beijing with the Hong Kong Team to take part in the Asia Pacific Orienteering Championships in mid-October. Steve has been orienteering since the age of 11, when he first started competing in England's picturesque Lake District where he grew up. "I'm looking forward to competing against world class competition in Europe," commented Steve. "The experience will help sharpen my fitness and technical skills before the events in Beijing." Steve, a systems analyst in ITB, has been involved in various projects since he started working in the Force two years ago, and is currently involved in the management of Force IT training systems. A second Force orienteer, Sergeant Wong Hak-shun of Traffic NTN, was the winner in his age group division of the 1997/98 Champions League, and narrowly missed selection to go to Beijing. |
The Police Orienteering Club is now committed to greater participation in the OAHK Orienteering competitions which are held on Sunday mornings from September to April. These events also have categories suitable for novices. Any officer who wants information about entering the events can contact Police Orienteering Club chairman Richard Morgan on 2860-3667, or vice-chairman William Chan on 2814-4361. The Club will organise an event for Force members in December 1998. |
BASKETBALL competition for the MacDonald Cup drew an enthusiastic and determined following with Regional teams once again battling it out for the coveted trophy. After a series of exciting heats and intense rivalry, NTS Region met Marine Region in the finals ? breaking the traditional Marine/PHQ stranglehold on the competition. The final game was battled out at the PSRC on 19 June with Director of Personnel & Training Leung Fung-shun on hand to watch the proceedings and to present prizes. | ![]() The NTS Winning Team with trophy |
The match was close with both teams pulling ahead by turns throughout the quarters. Three minutes before the game's end, however, and with Marine Region just marginally in the lead, NTS pulled out a few surprise moves that secured them the lead as the final whistle blew and broke the Marine/PHQ winning monopoly on the sport-a feat they hope to repeat at next year's event. ”ŠPRM |
The competition was part of a Stop Smoking Campaign begun in the Region in 1997, in which participants were required to quit smoking for the month of June. They were sponsored by their friends and colleagues by means of donations to the Hong Kong Cancer Fund. A total of 56 officers from eight formations participated. All had enjoyed a smokeless month and were awarded certificates. At the same time, a prize was awarded to the major and minor formations (as well as the individual) garnering the highest donations. The winners were Yau Tsim District, Regional Crime KW and Wong Chi-man, SP HQ T KW. Total donations exceeded $36,000 ? which was presented to a Hong Kong Cancer Fund representative by Mr Walker. |
