Full Force honours for PC

In remembrance: Hundreds prepare to hold a minute's silence during the vigil for valiant PC Leung Shing-yan on the PSRC pitch

Police Constable Leung Shing-yan was buried with full Force honours at Gallant Gardens on March 26, with scores of senior officers and colleagues paying their last respects.

The burial followed official services at the Universal Funeral Parlour in Hung Hom. A vigil was also held on the Police Sports and Recreation Club pitch on March 24.

PC Leung was shot dead in cold blood with his own Force Issue Revolver while on duty in Lei Muk Shue, March 14.

More than 400 attended the funeral including Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, Chief Secretary for Administration Anson Chan, Financial Secretary Donald Tsang, Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung, Legislative Council President Rita Fan and Secretary for Security Regina Ip, along with Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui and other senior officers.

PC Leung's coffin, draped in the National Flag, was carried by his LMS Division colleagues and escorted to Wo Hop Shek for burial.

Scores of wreaths were laid at the funeral parlour, many from senior government officials and business heads.

The services came just days after some 1,800 colleagues, friends, family and representatives from other disciplined forces paid tribute to PC Leung at the vigil. The Police Band played some solemn pieces before all in attendance observed a minute's silence.

Condolence letters were read out, and speeches were made by Mr Tsang, JPOA Chairman Lau Kam-wah, PC Leung's Patrol Sub-unit Commander Lam Yam-man and other colleagues, before his fiancee Cheung Ling-chi thanked all for all their help and support.

In his eulogy, Mr Tsang said the Force mourned a young and dedicated officer, adding that his death outlined the uniqueness and importance of police work, and the stress and potential danger faced by officers, especially those on the frontline.

Mr Lau praised PC Leung for his dedication in serving the public, and in maintaining law and order.

"The performance of PC Leung Shing-yan set a good example in which all officers should show solidarity in the face of challenges," Mr Lau said. Secretary for the Civil Service Joseph Wong wrote to all government staff saying the untimely death of the young PC was particularly saddening, and added that he was confident the Force, under the leadership of Mr Tsang, would continue to demonstrate its top professionalism.

PC Leung joined the Force in 1996, serving in different formations including the Police Tactical Unit.
