The Hong Kong Police Volunteer Services Corps (PVSC) has long been dedicated to coordinating and promoting volunteer work. Established under the PVSC in 2014, the Police volunteer barber team - “Loving Barbers” regularly visits residential care homes to provide free haircuts for the elderly, having served 22 facilities and completed more than 440 haircuts to date. Beyond styling, the volunteers also take time to chat and share everyday moments with the elderly.

Turning a Past Trade into a Power for Community Service

Before joining the Force, team member Sun Man-kit worked as a hairstylist. Over the years, he has actively participated in volunteer haircutting and taken the initiative to serve as an instructor, passing on his craft to his fellow colleagues.

He shared that he had never imagined his past hairdressing skills would not only find new life in the Force, but also turn into a powerful way to care for the elderly and serve the community.

Their Smiles are the Best Reward

“A haircut isn’t just about looking neat and refreshed - it’s about letting the elderly know they’re valued and cared for,” Sun said. With some care home residents experiencing limited mobility or even being bedridden, Sun always checks on their physical condition before carefully tending to the hair around their scalp, ears and neck.

“I hope to give them a neat, comfortable hairstyle so they can live each day with confidence and vitality,” he said. For Sun and his teammates, the most treasured reward is seeing the elderly look in the mirror at their fresh new look, light up with smiles, and say, “Thank you so much”.

Serving as a Volunteer Barber Team Instructor

To benefit more elderly people, Sun has organised his hairdressing skills into a structured course, and serves as an instructor for the Police volunteer barber team course. After completing the classroom training, the trainees first practise on friends and family under Sun’s guidance, enabling them to gain hands-on experience and confidence before serving in care homes.

Uniting the Power of Haircutting to Bring Warmth to the Community

Sun finds immense satisfaction in passing on his craft to his fellow colleagues. “An individual’s strength is always limited, but by sharing this skill with dozens of like-minded team members, we bring warmth to more care homes and benefit more elderly people.”

A pair of hairdressing scissors does more than craft a refreshing hairstyle - it unites the caring strength of the Force and spreads warmth to the elderly.
