The Force set up its first detective training facility in the Aberdeen Police Station as early as the 1960s.  Later in the 1980s, a Detective Training School was officially established in the former Royal Air Force Officers' Mess in Kai Tak.  In a bid to upgrade training facilities, the Force further relocated the Detective Training School to Police College's Aberdeen Campus in early 2000 and it was later renamed as Detective Training Centre.

 

In 2011, the Force Study Team on Recruitment and Retention of Crime Officers at District Level put forward a proposal to redevelop the vacated LMSOB into a Detective Training Centre for enhancing the professional status of crime officers and boosting their morale and sense of belonging. The plan also made optimal use of existing resources and the space vacated on the Aberdeen Campus after relocation of the Detective Training Centre was used for foundation training.

 

The new Detective Training Centre has incorporated more advanced infrastructure and technology-driven training programmes, including the Three Dimension Immersive and computerised interactive simulated scenarios for crime investigation training.  The centre has also pioneered the use of tablet computers and radio frequency identification technology in management and training of the Disaster Victims Identification Unit, providing a more systematic way of processing and identifying disaster victims.

 

The Detective Training Centre has completed a thorough review of detective training courses and revamped its major training programmes. A new "Advanced Criminal Investigation Module Course" has been launched to offer greater flexibility to meet the operational needs of frontline crime officers and to attract more aspiring officers to join the crime stream.

 

With the opening of the new Detective Training Centre, Police College hopes it would provide world-class detective training programmes and facilities.
