Former Hong Kong golf team member Tong Siu-lun realised his dream of joining the Hong Kong Police Force in 2023 when he passed all the training and assessments for new recruits. It was a major step up from his earlier role as an auxiliary police officer, which he took on after graduating from university. He said his passion for police crime dramas since childhood fueled his dream of joining the Force. “It’s a job that comes with a real sense of purpose and mission. I wanted to become one of them.”
Now attached to the Police Tactical Unit, he was one of the first officers on the scene of the devastating fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po. He helped evacuate residents, even carrying elderly people with disabilities on his back through the smoke-filled buildings to safety. Amid sweat and fatigue, he became more determined about his original decision to join the Force.
The transition from auxiliary to regular police work is a big challenge he embraced with gusto. “There’re a lot more responsibilities, and we have to stay on duty for long hours. It can be tough, but working alongside my colleagues and seeing the impact of what we do gives me a deep sense of satisfaction.”
The same level of dedication and discipline was applied to his previous episode of intense and competitive golfing. He picked up the sport at the age of seven and competed for the Hong Kong team at 13, pulling off a hole-in-one just a year later.
Although he left competitive golfing, he never walks away from the game. He represents the Force in the annual Triangular Golf Tournament, which is hosted in rotation by the police forces of Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore. He has won the individual championship for two consecutive years. In addition, as an executive committee member of the Police Golfing Society, he actively promotes the sport within the Force.
A golf craze swept through Hong Kong in March 2026 when the LIV Golf Hong Kong was held at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling. The event brought together top international players and created huge excitement for the sport among the public.
Tong sees strong parallels between professional golfing and police work. He believes a good golfer has to study the surroundings and adapt strategies according to the unique topography of each hole. “If a hole has challenging topography, you play it safe and hold back. But when the conditions improve or an opportunity arises, you go all out and give the shot everything you’ve got. Golf has taught me how to strategise, stay focused on my goals even in difficult times, adjust my effort according to the situation, and move forward step by step.”
He applies the same step-by-step philosophy to the way he lives his life. “On the course, a great shot may be a straight hole-in-one, or a curved shot clearing numerous obstacles, getting onto the green and into the hole. No matter how far your goal may seem or how daunting the challenges are, as long as you stay committed, the ball will always find its way into the hole.”
The Police Golfing Society recruits members throughout the year. All are welcome to join. Please contact Mr Lo (petermclo@police.gov.hk) for more details.
